MACHAKOS UNIVERSITY INKS TO BE THE THIRD UNIVERSITY TO HOST ONE OF THE TEN AFRICA LUBAN WORKSHOPS

Machakos University and Tianjin City Vocational College signed, on Tuesday 15^th October 2019, a letter of Intent that will see the two institutions fast track establishment of cooperation. A Luban workshop, for Cloud Computing and Applications, will be constructed at Machakos University, said Prof. Peter Mwita, The Deputy Vice Chancellor in-charge of Research, Innovation and Linkages. Prof. Mwita further informed participants that negotiations started in early July 2019 and memorandum of understanding was approved by the University council on 11^th October 2019, thus completing the internal process.

The County Executive Committee (CEC) member in charge of Education, Mr. Lazarus Kivuva, who represented the County, said in his remarks, that the Government of Machakos County supports the University’s initiatives  of collaborations and to host the Luban Workshop and will provide every necessary support.

In her opening remarks the Vice chancellor, represented by the Deputy Vice chancellor (Academics and Student affairs), Prof. Joyce Agalo, reaffirmed the commitment and support of the university to the establishment of the Luban Workshop as this was in line with the University’s Mandate.

The President of  Tianjin City Vocational College, Li Yan, expressed gratitude to Machakos University for the auspicious event and commitment to host the Luban Workshop. She said that the workshop is expected to be launched in mid December, 2019 and will include the following  areas  of Cloud Computing:

1. Cloud network convergence learning area
2. Data center practice area
3. Smart city practice area
4. The air classroom teaching area

Later after the Signing Ceremony, the delegation paid a courtesy to the Chief Administrative Secretary and Principal Secretary, State Department of University  and Research, Prof. Collette Suda, at the Ministry of Education Headquarters in Nairobi. Prof. Suda commented the two institutions for initiatives towards establishing a partnership. She said the Government supports the construction of the Luban Workshop. She advised that Machakos University should use the Workshop to enhance her niche by focusing on higher training programmes that exploit the opportunities provided by the Luban Workshop.
