In a colourful event held at Tala Boys High School, presided over hy His Excellency, Eng. Francis Maliti, the Deputy Governor, Machakos County, Machakos University conducted a career clinic for secondary school students and parents, giving them tips on how to excel in academics and set a dream career. Led by Dr. Wycliffe Amukowa, the Ag. Registrar (Research, Innovation and Linkages) the team comprised of Prof. Henry Embeywa (Motivational Speaker), Mr. Joel Mulelu (Machakos University, Director, TVET Programmes) and Mr. Adams Shisia (Marketing Co-ordinator).

This being Machakos University Outreach mission, students were given a chance to sample courses and programmes offered by Machakos University and were guided on relevant subject combinations suitable for specific careers. The essence was not only to inspire the students, but also to mentor them. Dr. Amukowa advised the students that they should have their aim as the sun and the moon is only a stop-over, as this is what Machakso University emphasizes. While conferring a medal to the overall best students in academics, sports and discipline, Dr. Amukowa told the students that in the 20th Century, the sky was the limit, but in the 21st Century, people have gone above the sky, only leaving the grave as the limit.

“Dear Students, just make your destination known. If you are going to the sun, let it be known, if it is the moon, let it be known. Nothing like I want to reach the moon, yet you tell us that you are aiming at the sun (…) we no longer work hard, we work smart, and the grave is the limit” Dr. Amukowa told the students.

In his talk, Prof. Embeywa told the students, parents and all the guests to always seek God, humble themselves and they shall excel. He emphasized the need for focus, connection, thanksgiving and mindset for academic excellence and achieving higher aspiration. Quoting 2 Chronicles 7:14, Prof. Embeywa said:

“If my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

Mr. Mulelu and Shisia took the students through the steps on how to go up the academic ladder, hence career development.

“There is no grade called fail. The grade you get only indicates your entry point into a career. A mean Grade of A, means that your entry point is at the top, whereas D, which is none of you is encouraged to get, means your entry point is at the bottom. This explains why all courses are offered at various, that is, degree, diploma and certificate. Machakos University has taken care of all these entry points and is ready to admit all of you.” Mr. Mulelu told the students and their parents.

The Chief Guest, His Excellency, Eng. Francis Maliti, told the students, parents and all the guests present to make Machakos University a number one choice.

“It is our university, by our doorstep, and what you can see today, it is a university with our interests at heart. Together with shall make it a great university of our time” the Chief Guest said.

The Principal of Tala Boys High School greatly appreciated the fact that he can now see that the university is now going to the people and applauded Machakos University for leading the way. He invited the staff to the school to continue with the Career Clinic on Wednesday, 27th June, 2013
