Academic Life
Professor Peter N. Mwita holds degrees of Bachelor of Science (First Class Honours) from Kenyatta University Master of Applied Statistics from Macquarie University, Sydney in Australia and Ph.D. (Statistics) from the Technical University of Kaiserslautern in Germany.
Before his appointment, as Full Professor at Machakos University in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, he was full Professor of Statistics in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Sciences at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
He started his academic life at JKUAT , as Teaching Assistant, in then Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. Over 23 years, he progressed through academic ranks in the University to the position of Full Professor. He lead the development and introduction of various academic programmes at JKUAT. In particular , the B.Sc. Financial Engineering (2010) and Master of Science in Applied Statistics (1996) were first introduced in Kenya
through JKUAT , to his credited.
As part of his social responsibility, in academia, he accepted several appointments as external examiner for academic programmes in areas of Probability, Statistics, Actuarial Science and Financial Mathematics in both postgraduate and undergraduate. These universities include Moi University, University of Kabianga, University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University.
He has examined over 30 masters and Doctor of Philosophy theses in several universities within and outside Kenya. He has been active in Peer Review and Editorial work, for instance, in the East African Journal of Statistics and International Journal of Management and Administrative Sciences.
He is registered member of the Kenya National Statistical Society, where he also served as elected Chairman for two years and re-elected for further two years in 2014.
Prof. Mwita is generating knowledge through research in the following areas of interest:
- Nonparametric Estimation
- Time Series and Applications in Finance
- Extreme Value Theory and Application to Risk Exposures and Bootstrap Methods.
He has published over 50 papers in refereed journals and presented over 30 papers in conferences and workshops. He has supervised 10 Ph.D. and 14 Masters Students in Statistics. Currently he has four ongoing Ph.D. students. As lead and research collaborator, he has raised over 150 million Kenya shillings, in research and development, over the years through research funding and spearheaded collaborations both locally and internationally.
